MANGANESE
Manganese is a trace mineral that is crucial in activating enzymes in the body. Manganese aids numerous enzymes in the body participating in synthesis such as that of urea and glutamine, metabolism of sugar and protection of tissues from free radicals. The enzymes activated by manganese are also essential for the function of other nutrients such as biotin, choline, vitamin C and thiamin.
Manganese is found mostly in the bones regulating enzymes that are critical in bone formation. Additionally, it also acts as a catalyst in the metabolism of protein and carbohydrates and in the synthesis of fats and cholesterol. The rest of the manganese in the body can be found in the liver, pancreas, kidneys and pituitary glands.
Manganese deficiency usually stems from dietary deficiency of this mineral. Since manganese is an important component to several enzymes, it is crucial to maintain an adequate intake of manganese. It is very rare for people to experience manganese deficiency unless it is removed from the regular diet. Symptoms of manganese deficiency are high blood sugar levels, skin irritations, bone loss, low cholesterol levels, nausea, vomiting, and hearing impairment. In severe cases of deficiency paralysis, deafness and blindness may occur.
To keep the body’s manganese levels sufficient enough to support enzymatic functions, manganese should be a part of a regular diet. Excellent sources are raspberries and strawberries. Manganese can also be found in vegetables such as beans, cloves, turmeric, romaine lettuce, collard greens, squash, chard, cucumber, spinach, kale and garlic. Nuts are also rich in manganese. The daily recommended value for males and females, including pregnant and lactating women, aged 19 years and older is 11 milligrams/day.
Toxicity from manganese is not usually caused by dietary intake of manganese. In most cases, excessive levels of manganese in the body are a result of supplementation or exposure to manganese dust. Toxicity may result in impotency, hallucinations, irritability, neurologic problems and altered mental state.
