VITAMIN B6 (Pyridoxine)

Sufficient amounts of Vitamin B6 are required for the synthesis of amino acids. The nucleic acids that are used in the production of DNA in our genes need this vitamin. Amino acids and nucleic acids are important in forming new cells; thus, vitamin B6 is considered a vital part of the development of all new cells in the body.

Vitamin B6 also supports the processes in the nervous system. Amines, molecules in the nervous system that transmit messages from one nerve to another, are made out of amino acids. Since vitamin B6 is required in the synthesis of amino acids, vitamin B6 is considered to have an important role in supporting the nervous system.

Vitamin B6 may prevent or treat cardiovascular system conditions such as atherosclerosis, hyperhomocysteinemia, and hypertension; nervous system conditions, including carpal tunnel syndrome, depression, diabetic neuropathy, autism and epilepsy; and skin conditions such as acne, and eczema.

Individuals who are vitamin B6 deficient may develop skin disorders such as eczema and seborrheic dermatitis. Vitamin B6 deficient individuals may also suffer from nerve-related symptoms such as convulsions and seizures. Since vitamin B6 plays an essential role in the development of red blood cells, individuals who are suffering from vitamin B6 deficiency may experience anemia and fatigue.

Excellent sources of vitamin B6 in food include garlic, tuna, cauliflower, mustard greens, celery, cabbage, crimini mushrooms, asparagus, broccoli, kale, collard greens, Brussels sprouts, cod and chard.

The recommended daily value intake of vitamin B6 is 2 milligrams per day. Individuals who take vitamin B6 in excess may experience toxicity symptoms such as bloating, depression, fatigue, impaired memory, irritability, headaches, numbness, difficulty walking, and restlessness. The Tolerable Upper Intake Level for vitamin B6 is 100 milligrams for adults 19 years and older.
